HRH Prince Philip’s motorboat, a 1956 Albatross MkIII Super Sports activities Runabout, will go up for auction in April via Bonhams.

Initially owned by HRH the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the 1956 Albatross MkIII Tremendous Sports activities Runabout is just one of only 607 of its style created and will go up for sale on 10 April 2022 at the Goodwood Members’ Conference.

The listing claims the sportsboat was carried aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia and is in first and unrestored ailment with a guide selling price of among £20,000 and £40,000.

According to Bonhams, in 1967 it was moved to the Balmoral Estate wherever apparently it was afterwards driven by the late Princess Diana. In 1957 it was famously photographed at Cowes with the eight-12 months-previous Prince Charles seated in the passenger seat, and this impression was utilized 64 several years later on in the ‘thank you’ card issued by the Prince in response to the numerous messages of sympathy received subsequent his father’s demise in 2021.

The Albatross was decommissioned in 1987 and retains its initial Ford 100E motor, states Bonhams. On file are copies of correspondence from both equally Albatross Marine and Buckingham Palace.

Albatross Maritime was started in 1949 by Archie Peace, an plane engineer formerly with the Bristol Aeroplane Company, at Good Yarmouth, Norfolk where he was quickly joined by enterprise partners Peter Hives and Bruce Campbell.

Launched in Might 1956, the MkIII product retained the MkII’s riveted aluminium, stepless planing hull with only insignificant improvements but was fitted with an enhanced and extra strong edition of the ubiquitous Ford sidevalve engine.

The Albatross captivated a distinguished clientele – HRH Prince Phillip owned two at different instances, Brigitte Bardot was photographed in an Albatross at St Tropez, Aristotle Onassis owned an Albatross Prince Rainier of Monaco experienced 6 at one particular time Thai racing driver Prince Bira owned yet another and Lord and Lady Docker saved a single (for water snowboarding) aboard their vintage superyacht, Shemara.
