A sailor from New Milton, Hampshire has said he felt he was “caught up in a horror film” when a pod of 30 orca whales regularly attacked the yacht he was crewing on.
Nathan Jones, 27, stated the 25ft long mammals, which can pounds five tonnes every, attacked the vessel for far more than two several hours, according to The New Milton Advertiser & Lymington Times.
“At 1 point it all went tranquil, and I thought they experienced eventually absent,” explained Jones. “Then I seemed out to sea and spotted them about two miles away coming back. It was scary, a little bit like that instant in Jaws when the shark returns.”
Jones experienced remaining Ramsgate with two other crew to provide the yacht to its proprietor in Lefkas, Greece, when the incident transpired in the vicinity of the Gibraltar straits.
“We very first tried motoring genuinely slowly and gradually away from them, but they just retained coming. We experienced the automatic pilot on, but it went off due to the fact the whales were being either biting or hitting the rudder.
“Coastguard information in our circumstance is to switch off the motor and echo sounder and just take the sails down. We then just experienced to sit it out.”
When the whales appeared to be calming down, the crew ran up the sails to “try and creep away”, according to The New Milton Advertiser & Lymington Moments.
When they were two miles absent from the pod, they turned on the engine and “limped into Gibraltar” in which a huge chunk of the rudder was identified to be missing.
This is not the to start with incident claimed of orcas ‘attacking’ boats off the Spanish coast. It is imagined by researchers that the orcas are just using precautionary methods to guard themselves and that these attacks are not destructive or meditated.
